Drambuie
Highland Golf Classic 2003
Slainte
If
you're planning to get an event off to a flying start there can be few
better places in Scotland to do it than within the grounds of Skibo castle
at the Carnegie Club. Hosted by Drambuie the welcome reception at the
clubhouse was enjoyed by almost one hundred visitors - many meeting up
with players from previous years, other just playing in their first Drambuie
Classic. One thing was common to all and that was the agreement that it
was great to be in this particular part of the Scottish Highlands.
The
receptions have become an integral part of the Drambuie Classics As always
the visitors received a traditional Scottish welcome from young Jan Maclean
who entertained all on the bagpipes. Being supported by its new sponsor
made it even more enjoyable and copious amounts of complimentary Drambuie
was sampled by all and the event organisers were delighted that Muriel
McMillan (pictured) from Drambuie was on hand to receive a commemorative
print of Royal Dornoch.
Day One
As usual there was a smattering of hangovers of various shapes and sizes
on the first tee on the first morning. It is an interesting Classic fact
that the average stableford scores drop in inverse proposition to the
blood alcohol count - the day one average of 27.7 drops on a daily basis
until the last day when it reaches 25.7. It is unlikely that the Drambuie
Highland will be very much different! The first golfers were welcomed
on the respective tees with a piper and a bottle of Drambuie and the 2003
event was underway.
The
wind caused enough problems at both courses today and this could be reflected
in the average score of 25.6 points - some two below the average in all
the Drambuie Classic events since they teed off in 2000. Brora was playing
more difficult with an average stableford of 24.6.
Best and
most impressive score of the day was the 36 points at Brora carded by
Lewis Baker from Failrop Waters in Hertfordshire. His mother Anne is a
veteran of five classics and has collected many a prize over the past
couple of years. Baker junior's 36 was a great effort in the wind. Highlight
at Golspie was the 35 from Mortonhall's David Paterson. Mark Stevenson
from East Sussex and Michael Carr from Dornoch are close behind on 34
points with a group of 16 behind them in excess of thirty points. Leading
lady from Woodhall Hills was Christine Barker with 32 and combine with
her husband Tony they're in third place in the pairs with 63 points.
The Pairs
event which runs alongside the individual is being lead by Mortonhall
pairing Forson and Paterson with 65 points followed by Baker and Coyle
from Hertfordshire and then the Barkers.
So in short
a most enjoyable day - fast and very difficult greens, gusting wind but
no rain.
