Highland Golf Classic
Highlands of Scotland
The Dornoch Firth
Royal Dornoch, Golspie, Brora & Tain
Sunday 21st to Thursday 25th September 2008
What better way to finish the golfing season off than with four days wonderful golf in the autumnal Highlands?
The four courses in The Highland Golf Classic combine to reflect just why Scotland is known as the Home of Golf. The grandeur of Royal Dornoch with its magnificent setting and rolling fairways; the rugged nature of Brora and its roaring seas; the mix of links and parkland and superb views from Golspie and the timeless sculpted holes of Old Tom Morris' Tain Golf Club.
These four courses offer something for everyone and just the atmosphere of the area and the wonderful scenic drives to each course nakes this event quite unique.
The 2008 Drinks reception will double as the best way to watch the final round of the 2008 Ryder Cup and the Highland Banquet will seal the week off in style
Event Itinerary
Sunday 21st September
As ever the welcome reception, registration, buffet, a wee dram and some Scottish music will play a part but for 2008 so will The Ryder Cup! It's the final day of the event at Valhalla in Louisville and as we always do with The Classics we'll make the most of the final stages of the event with the drinks reception timed around the screening. The reception will start at 5pm in Dornoch (12 noon in Kentucky!) and will go on until the last point is clinched! We are currently tying down a venue but will be providing large screens for the players to watch it all on.
Monday 22nd September
Golf tees off (with Ryder Cup hangovers in place) on the Monday morning at the neighbouring towns of Brora and Golspie. Two entirely different layouts but both epitomise everything that this event is all about. We'll have the piper on the first tee overlooking the wonderful beach at Brora. We shall try to have some later tee times...
Tuesday 23rd September
The field reverses this morning with the first 36 holes over Golspie and Brora being completed. Those out early on day one will be a bit later on day two. Tuesday also provides the first Highland Classic Whisky Night to be held at the Glenmorangie Distillery in Tain.
Wednesday 24th September
The Highland Golf Classic used to move between The Dornoch area and Nairn but it soon became a permamant fixture around these four courses when we were able to secure access to Royal Dornoch. This magnificent links acts as the hook for The Highland Golf Classic and play is over it and nearby Tain on days three and four.
Thursday 25th September
The final eighteen holes are played in leaderboard order with half the field playing on the links at Dornoch and the other half just over the Firth in Tain. The prizegiving dinner is at the magnificent Dunrobin Castle complete with bagpipes, fiddles and accordions. Kilts are of course optional but we will offer a hire service should you wish to dress for the occasion. Transfers will be available from to and from Dunrobin Castle to the main hotels in Dornoch at the end of the evening.

The Golf Courses
The Highland event brings together four of the finest courses in the country let alone the area. How much better could it be at the start of your golfing year?
|
Royal Dornoch |
|
Records show that the incredible natural landscape that defines golf in Dornoch has hosted golfers since 1616 and we are proud that the tradition has continued into the 21st century. The responsibility for actually designing the Championship course fell to the legendary Old Tom Morris who used the unique links-land features to create a magical golfing experience – one that prompted Tom Watson, five times Open Champion, to say ‘it’s the most fun I’ve ever had on a golf course’. Dornoch continues to charm the Classic players and we are charmed that John Duncan and his committee keep welcoming us back to perhaps the most magical of all the courses in Scotland. |
|
Brora |
|
Gleneagles may be more glamorous, Carnoustie more prestigious. It is Brora which is the most northerly golf memorial to James Braid in his native Scotland. Brora is also the headquarters of the James Braid Golfing Society, and while its President, Peter Thomson, and fellow member Ronan Rafferty annually enthuse, the club golfer, the bedrock of the game, will derive equal pleasure and satisfaction from Brora's 6110 yards. The inward nine holes follow the fence line of the bordering croft land, with out of bounds to concentrate the mind. Of the two short holes, the delightful 13th, Snake, winds back towards the sea, whilst the 18th contains all the concerns of protecting a score against a bunkered green a two hundred yard carry away and under the scrutiny of the clubhouse windows. |
|
Golspie |
|
Set at the foot of Ben Bhraggie in the Highlands of Scotland, Golspie Golf Club offers one of the finest settings for a round of golf. Only 15 miles from the famous Royal Dornoch and within a short drive of the other local courses Tain and Brora, Golspie offers a unique blend of seaside links, heath and parkland golf. Founded in 1889 and designed by the legendary James Braid. The course offers a refreshing challenge to all abilities of golfer. |
|
Tain |
|
Our Championship length links enjoys spectacular views over mountains and sea and benefits from a sheltered climate, which allows favourable golfing conditions for most of the year. With the 3rd hole rated as one of the best 18 links holes in Scotland and the17th acknowledged as one of the top 18 holes designed by Old Tom Morris, we believe that Tain offers one of the finest settings and challenges for a round of golf. It is a veritable Classic course. |
Accommodation
As a destination The Highlands offer the widest choice of accommodation however Dornoch is currently suffering from a distinct lack of bedspaces and its causing problems throught the year. We've reserved as many rooms as we can in Dornoch itself but they are at a premium and we advise early booking. We've also secured hotels in Tain and Brora and there is a lot of bed and breakfast and self catering accommodation in the area.
The Royal Golf Hotel has been claosed all of this year and is due to reopen in 2008 and as soon as it does we'll do our best to bring you the best available price.
The prices below are all based on two people sharing a twin room and are inclusive of five nights accommodation inclusive of breakfast, drinks reception and buffet on the Sunday, four rounds of golf and the prizegiving banquet in Brora.
