Congratulations to Eric Godshalk - Winner of the 2006 Fife Classic
The Scottish Golf Classics had their first ever winner from the States this week with Eric Godshalk taking the singles title at the Fife Golf Classic. Eric sealed his victory with an excellent final round of 39 points over the wonderful links of Kingsbarns which in the end guaranteed that he wasn't going to be caught. However, not far behind were Ian Allsop on 140 points and James McKean who finished with 139 points.
So that was that for another year and the word all round that it was a wonderful week of golf and Scottish hospitality helped by some superb Scottish golf courses and fantastic Scottish weather
So the golf was great, the scoring magnificent and the weather typically balmy Scottish early summer sunshine!
What more could you ask for on a visit to the Home of Golf ...

Fife Golf Classic Day 3 - Crail Balcomie Links
Balcomie Links, Crail is steeped in history, the club being one of the oldest in the world. With only light winds and perfect conditions on the course it was expected that some high points totals would be carded.

Fife Golf Classic Day 2 - Ladybank Golf Club
It was recently confirmed as a venue for the final Open Qualifying for the 2010 Open Championship at St Andrews and for the competitors strolling the tree lined fairways at Ladybank today it was easy to see why the R&A rate the course so highly.
With the wettest May in history and such a late spring many courses in Scotland have suffered from poor early year growth. Ladybank however was in absolutely prime condition for the second round of the Fife Golf Classic and combined with the perfect weather conditions provided the ideal opportunity for good scoring.
However before analysing the day’s play it is worth noting that this is the fifth time that The Fife event has returned to Ladybank and in that time we as organisers have witnessed the complete transformation of the clubhouse facilities from old, dark traditional clubhouse to perhaps one of the best and most hospitable golfing venues in the country. How do you gauge a golf club? Well, the Classic had a field of just under sixty out in the morning followed by a seniors event and supplemented by the arrival of the Chinese Scottish Golf Society. That’s a good enough measure for anyone!
Back to our event…
The day was perfect weather-wise – 22 degrees and sunny - but still elicited a comment from our six golfing visitors from Newcastle Under Lyme that they’d rather be on Turnberry. This related to the golfing conditions on The Ailsa Course six weeks earlier when they were drowned under a deluge and buffeted by 49 miles an hour winds. They’ve obviously dined out on the experience. Yet again we digress…
The weather raised the scoring to a higher level with the average score rising to 31.2 stableford points, with the highest two being registered by two of the American golfers; Eric Godshalk knocked in a tremendous 40 points with his ponytailed compatriot Tom Loser only one point shy. Iona McKean also scored 39 points but was pipped on the back nine countback.
This left the overall singles leaderboard with Ian Allsop on 75 points (and two under par rounds) two ahead of Eric on 73 and another one ahead of Iona on 72. Alan Green from Lancashire is sitting pretty in fourth place on 71 points.
The Pairs leaderboard is lead by Iona and her partner James playing out of Cottesmore with an excellent total of 143 five ahead of the second placed Allsop couple from Yorkshire and the Adamson’s a further five back.
So everyone’s happy, some mild sunburn maybe but that’s what golf in Scotland is surely all about!
(Footnote: Today was the infamous 6/6/06; spookily Bob Teufel from The States (whose name “apparently” translates from German to mean “Devil”) scored 23 points with three back to back 6’s on his card with the result that no-one wishes to play with him over the last two days of the event!)

Fife Golf Classic Day 1 - Scotscraig Golf Club
Scotscraig is arguably the least well known of the Open Qualifying Courses in this part of the country but for those playing it, it is truly one of those genuine hidden gems. It is links with a heathland style.
The scoring was quite high with an excellent 38 from Ian Allsop from Normanton with Elizabeth Robinson just a few points behind with 35 points.
