Fife Golf Classic

East of Scotland
St Andrews, Fife

Kingsbarns, The Dukes, The Torrance & The Devlin
Sunday 1st - Thursday 5th June 2008

St Andrews, world renowned as The Home of Golf and we are delighted that this year it plays centre stage for the very first time for the Fife Golf Classic with four courses within ten minutes of the town centre. This is the very best line up we've ever had for the Fife event yet it still provides amazing value for money with rounds over Kingsbarns, The Torrance and Devlin at Fairmont St Andrews and The Dukes Course.

The hook for The Fife Golf Classic over the past four years has undoubtedly been the wonderful links layout at Kingsbarns but for 2008 it is more than ably supported by three other championship courses. The golf itself is simply marvellous and it is suplemented by a range of three, four and five star hotels in the area and wonderful locations for the drinks reception and prizegiving dinner.

The Sunday welcome reception will be held at The National Trust for Scotland property at Hill of Tarvit and the final dinner at Rusacks in St Andrews adjacent to the famous 18th Hole.

If you've been looking for an excuse to play golf in the spiritual home we think you've just found it.

Event Itinerary

Sunday 1st June

Welcome reception, registration, buffet, a wee dram and some Scottish music at the wonderful National Trust for Scotland property at HIll of Tarvit only ten miles from St Andrews. The reception will tee off from around 7pm to allow those coming up earlier who may want to take in the excitement of the final day of next year's Curtis Cup which is taking place over the Old Course at St Andrews.

Monday 2nd June

Golf tees off on the Monday morning at the sister links of The Torrance and neighbouring Devlin at the magnificent Fairmont St Andrews Resort. The lone piper will welcome golfers to the clubhouse and players will have access to the practice facilities before teeing off on their 72 hole adventure around Fife.

Tuesday 3rd June

The field reverses this morning with the first 36 holes over The Torrance and Devlin being completed. Those out early on day one will be a bit later on day two. Tuesday also provides the return of the popular Fife Classic Whisky Night held again at The Inn at Lathones with proprietor Nick White playing host - this is not included in the price and requires to be prebooked as spaces are limited to forty.

Wednesday 4th June

The Fife Golf Classic only really got into its stride when Kingsbarns Links became one of the partner courses and we are delighted that once again the wonderful layout is part of the schedule. It is joined for the second year in row by The Dukes Course which has itself benefitted greatly from the reshaping of the course since its takeover by Kohler Resorts.

Thursday 5th June

The final eighteen holes are played in leaderboard order with half the field playing on the Dukes and the rest over Kingsbanrs. The prizegiving dinner is likely to be in St Andrews itself complete with bagpipes, fiddles and accordions. Kilts are of course optional but we will offer a hire service should you wish to dress for the occasion. Transfers will be available from the main hotels to the prizegiving dinner in St Andrews.

The Golf Courses

The Fife event brings together four of the finest "newer" courses in Scotland let alone the area. The four courses are in some ways a contrast to the history of St Andrews but in so many more ways highlight the future of golf in Scotland.

Kingsbarns

The Kingsbarns Golf Links site has long been known for its intimate connection with the sea. The fact that it's golf origins date back to 1793 is testimony to the attributes of the site which foster ideal conditions for links turf to flourish amid interesting natural terrain. This unique part of East Fife has sandy soils, undulating ridges and hollows, Cambo burn running into the sea, all set immediately against the rugged coastline of the North Sea. Kingsbarns Golf Links is a tribute to its rich Scottish links heritage.

"Six miles south of Scotland's Old Course at St. Andrews, along gentle coves of the North Sea, carved into hillsides that cant like a massive, curved amphitheater, is the new Kingsbarns Golf Links--so splendiferous in its concept and execution that we felt compelled to delcare it our first ever Best New International Course." Golf Digest

The Dukes

With a spectacular setting above St Andrews, the championship Duke's gives magnificent panoramic views over the surrounding countryside to the sea.

Duke's is highly regarded as one of the finest heathland championship courses in the British Isles and a 'must play' course for any golfer.  Its style ranks alongside the great inland challenges which demand accuracy and inventive play as well as power golf.  And with five separate tee positions at every hole, Duke's has the flexibility and challenge to appeal to golfers at every level.

The Torrance

The Torrance Course, designed by the late Gene Sarazen and winning Ryder Cup Captain, Sam Torrance, is a par 72, 7037 yard course that sweeps its way around the hotel and down to the coastal edge. It has been designed using the principles of links golf with an infusion of new styles. The natural contours of the land and the dramatic coastal setting are combined with a unique blend of Rye grass, innovative green-keeping skills and the expertise of winning Ryder Cup captain, Sam Torrance. As the course advances it works its way around the imposing structure of the hotel before bursting open to reveal a cross section of the remaining twelve holes down towards the cliff edge and all the while framed by the powerful canvass of the St Andrews skyline.

Historically The Torrance has proven extremely difficult to score well on but provides great fun whilst trying!

The Devlin

Bruce Devlin's experience and expertise have provided the Devlin with its innovative and exciting character. It is a truly magnificent Par 72, 7,049 yard championship course that sweeps its way along the rugged seaside landscape. This gem begins by innocently easing the golfer into a false sense of security, offering wide, well manicured fairways that wind around man-made water features and risky bunkers, teasing the golfer with a mix of par fours and fives.

The ridge holes open up to the panorama of the white water crashing on the rocky shoreline below and over the body of the North sea to the Grampian mountains which dominate the horizon. The ever-changing ambience of this vast and spectacular view heightens the experience for the golfer.

Accommodation

As a destination Fife offers as wide a choice of accommodation and we’ve selected some of the best. St Andrews has a wide choice of quality accommodation but as you can imagine it is quite expensive and often sold out early. Select from the five star resort at Fairmont or the Old Course Holte or from a selection of three and four star hotels in and around the delightful East Neuk. You’ll never be much more than half an hour from your golf course wherever you stay.

The prices below are all based on two people sharing a twin room and are inclusive of five nights accommodation inclusive of breakfast, drinks reception and buffet on the Sunday, four rounds of golf and the prizegiving banquet in St Andrews itself.
